Wolfpack - Cricketers Arms, Shaw - Saturday 23rd February 2008
Wolfpack are one of growing number of bands who are "stepping out" of the standard set list routine on a Rock Night. Tapping into the wealth of good material out there they bring songs forward that may not be quite as familiar but contain all the essential ingredients that rock aficionados require. No bad thing for the Northwest Rock Scene and the fans that go to watch, in my view.
With a pedigree that includes "Sister Rose" (Nigel (Nige) Roberts), Mad Racket (Mick (Rab) Rabbit and Paul (Andy) Anderson) and Talion ( Phil (Gav) Gavin) plus the original "Wolfpack" in its' various guises from 1979 until around 1987 it will be noted that these are experienced and extremely capable musicians who still possess passion and enthusiasm for their art. (No, I haven't forgotten Phil (Troft) Loftus, who besides, also, being ex-original Wolfpack,, I believe, gained his "spurs" "playing" in his bedroom! Mind you, if I was friends with Anna Kournikova (and single again) I think I would too!! (Sorry,Troft!! Sometimes you just gotta!!!).
First set got off to a rocking start with songs from the likes of Michael Schenker-"Armed and Ready", Judas Priest-"The Ripper" and "Strong Arm of the Law", UFO-"Shoot Shoot" (the video of which can be found on You Tube-enter search-"Wolfpack gig"), Fleetwood Mac-"Green Manalishi" (has someone been listening to me??), Iron Maiden-"Aces High", Diamond Head-"Am I Evil?", Y&T (Yesterday and Tomorrow) "Rescue me" and finishing off with a power version of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" it was a first set that rocked the rafters, with the audience, which had an age range across the spectrum, appreciating every tune. The whole band communicates very effectively with their audience, with eye contact, good humoured banter and even at times joining them on the dance floor!! All essential ingredients to nurture that "two ways" experience that makes for a damn good night.
The line up consists of Nige on Lead Vocals; a "singist" who I (and others in the pub) reckon has got to have one of the best "rock" voices on the circuit, Rab on Lead guitar, a muso of immense experience and skill who can play notes some guitar players only dream of reaching, Troft on rhythm guitar, laying down an undercurrent of support for Rab, occasionally taking lead, with humour and a clear joy in playing his music, Gav on bass, and supporting vocals, thundering out deep dark chords to match the relentless driving force that is Andy on drums. It needs mentioning that Andy is a giant of a man-he would need to be to play his drums the way he does. It is what us fellow drummers would call a "serious piece of kit" and is precisely the engine needed to drive the music forward.)
After the obligatory smoke and a chat (including wondering as to why Troft "does one" during the video "Shoot Shoot", speculation being rife that it could involve Anna K. again!) it was back to rocking the night away with the likes of Black Sabbath-"Neon Knights", Coney Hatch-"Devil's Deck", UFO-"Too Hot To Handle", Thunder-"Love Walked In", Metallica-"For Whom the Bell Tolls" (with Gav taking over on lead vocals and living the song as he played!!), Montrose-"Bad Motor Scooter", in the style of Sammy Hagar, Gun -"Word Up", Nickleback-"Never Again" (a song which went down particularly well), Judas Priest-"Victim of Changes", and ending the scripted set with an absolutely outstanding cover of Iron Maiden's "Hallowed Be Thy Name".
The "Encore" was, of course, inevitable, with covers of Led Zep & Kiss numbers- "Rock and Roll" and "Lick It Up" rounding the evening off splendidly and ensuring a very active dance floor!
All in all, a quality band, booked to return to the Cricketers soon, a quality night and one not to miss next time round!! Cricketers -1-Boring Saturday nights-0!!
